At the age of 29, it’s safe to say that magic is a life-long passion for John Bendewald. Born just outside of Chicago, John’s interest in magic began with a children’s magic set gifted to him by his parents. By the age of 8, John was escaping from handcuffs at family parties, frequenting the local magic shop, and performing at school for classmates and teachers. John discovered close up magic and sleight of hand at the age of 12. It has been his specialty ever since.
As a student, John used magic as a way to break out of his shell and challenge himself. By the time he was in college, his performances had earned him the name Magic John among his peers, a name which has stayed with him to this day.
In 2015, during his sophomore year of college, John combined his love of magic with a desire to help those in need. He created 1000 Miles For Humanity, a service project in which he rode his bicycle for over 1000 miles and performed custom magic shows to raise money for Habitat For Humanity. During the three week tour, John performed 12 shows and raised over $7000 for HFH.
John was keynote speaker at the 2015 HFH of Illinois conference, and recipient of a Habitat Hero award.
In 2021, John relocated to Los Angeles with his wife. Realizing there had never been a better time or place, John decided to take his love of magic from a hobby to a career. Within a year he was working as a full-time professional magician.
John has had hundreds of performances at all sorts of events, including corporate parties, weddings, nonprofit fundraisers, variety shows, music festivals, holiday parties, and more. He is a regular performer at Black Rabbit Rose and MainRó, as well as The Magic Castle.
